According to the cult – known as The Sword of God Brotherhood – the archangel Gabriel came to them and told them that everyone in the world except them was destined to go to “hellfire” as soon as the clocks tick over to the new year.
They are reportedly part of an off-shoot of the white supremacist group The Covenant, the Sword, and the Arm of the Lord, which was started in 1971 in the US state of Michigan.
The group became known for stockpiling weapons in preparation for going it alone and surviving in a post-apocalypse world.
Days in history when the Earth stood still
But the Covenant was thought to have disbanded following a raid on its compound by US authorities in 1985.
However, their chilling armageddon prediction has refused to go away, with conspiracists still convinced the end is nigh.
Nicholas C. James, an expert on doomsday theories, called the group “extremely secretive” and “quite good at hiding information about their whereabouts and their lore”.
However, he also said he suspects the group only consists of a handful of members, if they are still in existence at all.
Ken Mooney, who wrote a book on the all of the doomsday theories, said the mysterious sect remains an “enigma”.
He added no one is quite clear where the first reports about the group and their terrifying prophecy came from.
“Biblical prophesies indicate that the 120th Jubilee year in particular, which will fall in 2017, will bring about cataclysmic change”
Nicholas C. James
But the theory of 2017 signalling the end is supported by other religious conspiracists.
Mr James states: “A group called ‘Daniel’s Timeline’, which defines itself as following the true word of God apart from its expression in any particular religious canon, predicts that the world will end during a Jubilee year, as prophesied in the biblical Book of Daniel.
“According to Old Testament law, Jubilee years occur every fiftieth year and they are times when all debts are discharged and all property is returned to its rightful owner.
“Jubilee years are supposed to be times of celebration, but they can also be times of momentous change.
“In addition, biblical prophecies indicate that the 120th Jubilee year in particular, which will fall in 2017, will bring about cataclysmic change.”
Celebrities linked to cults over the years
And 12th Century Irish bishop Saint Malachy is believed to have prophecised that Pope Francis I would be the last before the world ends as we know it.
His ancient prediction apparently stated that there would be just 112 popes in the Vatican following the election of Pope Celestine II in 1143.
Pope Francis, who was recently reported to be in bad health, is the 112th.
