A six-year-old boy is reportedly fighting for life in hospital after he was left outside in freezing conditions in his pyjamas for 15 hours as punishment by his parents .
The little boy was forced to stay on a balcony outside an apartment in Brussels from 5am to 8pm on Boxing Day after helping himself to food from the kitchen, prosecutors said.
Emergency services found the youngster “unconscious and suffering from hypothermia and malnutrition”.
He is still in “a very critical condition in hospital”, a statement from the Brussels Prosecutors Office said.
The child’s twin sister was also removed from the flat, in the Saint-Josse area of the city, and taken to hospital, according to the Brussels Prosecutors Office.
She is also thought to have suffered mistreatment and malnutrition.
The twins’ mother, a 31-year-old French national, and their step-father, a 21-year-old Belgian, have been arrested , Het Laatste Nieuws reported.
They were held on suspicion of “torture of a minor by someone in a position of authority”, prosecutors said.
The Sun quoted Belgian officials as saying: “The step-father has confessed without realising the seriousness of the facts, while the mother is still in denial.”
Neither child was registered in Belgium, making it difficult for authorities to monitor their wellbeing, local mayor Emir Kir told RTL-TVI.
